My DH shared that when his mission call came he was back east doing work. His mom opened his call for him and told him over the phone that he would be going to Manchester. He immediately thought "England" and was thrilled. It was, however, Manchester, New Hampshire, and not as immediately exciting (especially because that is where he was at the time).
When I got my call it was just my mom and I home. The calls use to come on Thursdays back in my day (though perhaps my memory is off). I stopped off at the house between classes to see if it had come. Those who know me well understand that there would be no waiting and gathering of family before my call would be opened. Frankly, I'm surprised I made it inside the house before opening it up. I was hoping to go to South America, or at least to a Spanish speaking state side mission. To my surprise, and the first of many "this is not your work" lessons, I was called to Honolulu Hawaii (the only state in the nation WITHOUT a Spanish speaking population).
Well, after all our talk and testimony sharing that you go where called and are happy about it...Zach got called exactly where he wanted.
Thanks a lot for sending a mixed message to our kids. China, Hong Kong here he comes!

Congrats to your brother! What a challenging and exciting mission that will be!
One of my good friends served her mission in Honolulu from 95-96. YOu're prob a lot younger than me but maybe you'd know her. Kindra Anderson? She's awesome. YOu can link her blog from mine. Just wondering...
I was there in '98-'99, so just a little younger, not much though, clearly in my 30's...sigh.
Mission calls are so exciting to open up. I have been present for my brother's and most recently my bro-in-law. It's hard not to get emotional and all chocked up.
